What is Traveller’s Diarrhoea?

Traveller’s diarrhoea is usually a bacterial infection which causes diarrhoea with blood and mucus. It is usually picked up when abroad in tropical countries through poor hygiene and contaminated foods. It is sometimes referred to as ‘Delhi belly’.

What are the symptoms?

The main symptom is diarrhoea containing mucus or blood, but other symptoms can often include stomach cramps, nausea, and sometimes vomiting.

Treating Traveller’s Diarrhoea

Ciprofloxacin and Azithromycin are both effective in stopping any infection causing Traveller’s Diarrhoea.

If you are travelling to South or South East Asia, then Azithromycin is required as Ciprofloxacin is ineffective in these regions due to antibiotic resistance.

If you are travelling elsewhere then Ciprofloxacin will provide effective treatment.

When do I take this medicine?

This medicine should only be taken when Traveller's Diarrhoea has been confirmed. This is when you are passing three or more loose, unformed stools within a 24 hour period often accompanied by nausea, bloating, stomach pain, vomiting and/or fever.

How do I take the medication?

Each medicine is taken as a three day course.

  • Azithromycin: One 500mg tablet once a day for three days.
  • Ciprofloxacin: One 500mg twice a day (approximately 12 hours apart) for three days.

If your symptoms have not improved after taking one course of this medicine you should seek medical advice as soon as possible.

Additional Travel Advice

While suffering with Traveller’s Diarrhoea, it is important to stay hydrated due to the salt loss (because of the diarrhoea). Lots of water should be consumed and drinks high in electrolytes can be helpful in restoring the body with what it loses from the diarrhoea. Oral rehydration sachets are a useful way to restore lost salts and can be purchased from all good pharmacies.

General Antibiotic Advice

Antibiotics are ineffective against diarrhoea caused by viral or parasitic infections. To prevent antibiotic resistance, and maintain antibiotic effectiveness, all antibiotics should only be taken when there is confirmation that the symptoms are caused by a bacterial infection.

The most common side effects of these medicines are nausea and diarrhoea. For a full list of the side effects please check the patient information leaflets.
