Contraception

Overview

The contraceptive pill is the most popular form of contraception used by women, and is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when taken correctly. If you need advice on how to take this medicine for maximum effectiveness please email us at freeadvice@myonlinedoctors.co.uk

The pill, also known as the combined contraceptive pill, is a pill which contains artificial versions of the female hormones estrogen and progestin.

Taken daily, the pill prevents a woman’s ovaries from releasing an egg every month. It further both thins the lining of a woman’s womb, making less chance of an egg implanting into the womb to grow and it thickens the mucus in the neck of the womb so that sperm has difficulty penetrating in order to reach an egg.

The pill is taken for 21 days and then no pills are taken for the next 7 days.

Different Contraceptive Pills

There are two type of contraceptive pills:

The Combined Contraceptive Pill

The pill, also known as the combined contraceptive pill, is a pill which contains artificial versions of the female hormones estrogen and progestin.

This pill is taken for 21 days and then no pills are taken for the next 7 days. Some packs, such as Microgynon 30 ED, contain 7 placebo pills so that the habit of taking a pill every day is not broken.

The Mini Pill

The active ingredient in this oral contraceptive is progestin, a synthetic version of the natural female sex hormone progesterone. When taken correctly, the mini-pill is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. It works because it stops ovulation, stops sperm reaching an egg and prevents a fertilised egg implanting in the womb.
